Retail Group ESOS Phase 2 & 3
Support delivered to a mid-sized charity with ESOS Phase 3 compliance across its retail operations, which included multiple outlets throughout the county selling donated goods. A detailed energy audit was undertaken to identify the organisation’s highest energy-consuming processes and opportunities for improvement. The findings were consolidated into a clear, board-level recommendations report, providing practical measures to reduce energy consumption, improve efficiency and support the organisation’s wider sustainability objectives.

The Challenge
The group had not participated in ESOS Phase 2 due to a misunderstanding of the participation criteria, leaving the charity facing a compliance deadline with limited internal resources to demonstrate retrospective compliance. Energy consumption across the organisation was predominantly driven by the conditioning of retail spaces and energy-intensive distribution operations.
Our Approach
As the registered ESOS Lead Assessor, we led the full ESOS assessment, undertaking energy audits across a representative sample of the organisation's assets. We focused on the highest energy-consuming areas and developed a structured recommendations report, incorporating payback periods and prioritised actions to support informed, board-level decision-making and practical implementation.
The Outcome
The group achieved ESOS compliance ahead of the statutory deadline. The recommendations report identified a range of opportunities to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency, while ensuring the organisation met its regulatory obligations and avoided potential enforcement action from the Environment Agency.
